The intrepid family had many adventures at sea, but the South American was finally caught in a hurricane off Florida and wrecked in 1900. Lucy refused to let her husband go to sea again. So the family came home to the Hill House and the adjoining houses, which are now known as Captain's Quarters and Gull's Nest.
Captain Schjonemann ran a navigation school in the Hill House. He was much respected in the town, where he was known as Cap'n Ya Ya, reflecting his Scandinavian way of agreeing. He died in 1942, six weeks after the death of his wife, the doctor said of a broken heart. His daughter lived here for the rest of her life, until her death in 1984. PREVIOUS PAGE |
